Best Pre-Workout Shot (2026): Energy Shots for Workouts

pre workout shot

A pre-workout shot is a small (usually 2 oz), ready-to-drink energy shot you take 20–30 minutes before training, instead of scooping and shaking a powder. The best ones deliver roughly 150–200mg of caffeine with no sugar and a short label. Rhino Rush Ephedra Powered is a 2 oz, 200mg pre-workout shot with Ephedra viridis, no dyes, and no added vitamins.

Quick answer: For most lifters, the best pre-workout shot is a 2 oz bottle with about 200mg caffeine, taken in the car or during your warm-up. You lose the pump ingredients some powders add (citrulline, beta-alanine), but you gain zero prep, no shaker, and no 12 oz of liquid sloshing under the bar. If you want caffeine and nothing to mix, a shot wins.

What is a pre-workout shot?

A pre-workout shot is a concentrated, ready-to-drink stimulant you take before exercise. It does the main job of a pre-workout powder (caffeine for energy and output) in a bottle you can drink in one or two sips. Most shots are 2 oz; many powders mix to 8–12 oz. Rhino Rush's Ephedra Powered shots fit this category: 200mg caffeine plus Ephedra viridis for physical "body energy."

Is a pre-workout shot better than powder?

It depends on what you want from your pre-workout. Caffeine is the ingredient with the strongest evidence behind it for training performance, and a shot delivers it with no prep. Powders win if you specifically want pump or endurance ingredients in clinical doses.

How much caffeine should a pre-workout shot have?

About 3 mg per kg of bodyweight is a sensible starting point, per the International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand on caffeine, which reports performance benefits at roughly 3–6 mg/kg. That's about 200mg for a 150-lb lifter. The FDA cites 400mg a day as not generally associated with negative effects in healthy adults, so one 200mg shot leaves room for your morning coffee. Start lower if you're caffeine-sensitive or training at night. Details in how much caffeine is in Rhino Rush.

When should you take a pre-workout shot?

20–30 minutes before your first working set. Blood caffeine peaks roughly 30–60 minutes after you drink it, so taking it on the drive or during your warm-up lines the peak up with your heaviest work. For evening sessions, remember caffeine can take about 4–6 hours to drop by half. More in how to take Rhino Rush and energy shots and sleep.

Can you take a pre-workout shot with pre-workout powder?

Not a good idea. Stacking a 200mg shot with a 200–300mg scoop can push you past 400mg before you've touched a weight. Pick one. If you want both energy and pump, use a stim-free pump powder with the shot, and count every caffeine source.

Is the ephedra in Rhino Rush the banned kind?

No. Rhino Rush uses Ephedra viridis, a legal North American plant that published analyses show has little or no ephedrine. The FDA's 2004 rule banned dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids, which came mainly from Ephedra sinica (ma huang). More in Ephedra viridis explained and our ephedra guide.

Which Rhino Rush should you pick for the gym?

For lifting and conditioning, choose Ephedra Powered: it's built for body energy and output. The Nootropic line (250mg caffeine, agmatine, choline) is focus-first, better for desk work, studying, and long drives. Flavor is personal: Grape and Blue Raspberry are the most popular pre-gym picks.
