What is ephedrine?
Ephedrine is a sympathomimetic amine, a stimulant that acts on the nervous system. It was first isolated from Ephedra sinica and is now also made synthetically for drug products. In medicine it has been used as a bronchodilator. In the late 1990s and early 2000s it was also sold in weight-loss and energy supplements, which is what led to the ban.

Is ephedrine legal in the US?

Can you buy ephedrine over the counter?
Yes, but not off the shelf. Under the federal Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005, ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine products are "scheduled listed chemical products": they must be kept behind the counter or in a locked case, buyers must show photo ID and sign a logbook, and sales are capped at 3.6 grams per day and 9 grams per 30 days of the base ingredient. The reason is that ephedrine and pseudoephedrine can be used to make methamphetamine.
What you can't buy legally is an ephedrine "energy" or "fat burner" supplement. Any product sold as a dietary supplement that contains ephedrine alkaloids is illegal under the 2004 rule.
Is ephedrine the same as ephedra?
No. Ephedra is a genus of about 60 plant species; ephedrine is one alkaloid that some of them produce. Ephedra sinica (ma huang) is rich in it. Why did the FDA ban ephedrine in supplements?
The FDA announced its final rule in February 2004 (published in the Federal Register February 11), declaring dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids adulterated because they presented an "unreasonable risk of illness or injury." The record included thousands of adverse-event reports, including heart attacks, strokes, and deaths, mostly tied to high-dose weight-loss products. A federal appeals court upheld the ban in 2006.
